Prosecution rests, defense of former Detroit Mayor Kilpatrick begins

DETROIT (WKZO) -- The prosecution has rested its case in the federal corruption trial of former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick, his father Bernard Kilpatrick and contractor Bobby Ferguson.  Prosecutors spent 64 days laying out their case and turned over a 71 page set of instructions for the jury to use when they begin to deliberate.

Kilpatrick's defense team began their case by attempting to discredit testimony about how much money Kilptrick had and his use of the proceeds in the Kilpatrick Civic Fund.  Accountant Gary Leeman told the court federal prosecutors misled the jury because they failed to establish how much money Kilpatrick had saved prior to becoming mayor in 2002.  Leeman examined Kilpatrick's personal accounts and the Civic Fund.
