Teens Getting Sick From Energy Drinks

UNDATED (WTVB) - A new study reports some teens who consume large amounts of energy drinks are also showing up at doctors' offices with worrisome health problems.

The study, "Energy Drinks: What Teenagers (and Their Doctors) Should Know," says medical providers around the country are seeing teens with symptoms like insomnia, an overly-fast heartbeat, high blood pressure and even, in some cases, seizures.

Dr. Kwabena Blankson say there's also concern about the effects of the drinks, when used with alcohol.  The study calls for increased awareness about the ingredients in energy drinks, especially the levels of caffeine, and what the effects are.

The American Beverage Association blasted the study, saying most of their drinks contain no more caffeine than coffee and their ingredients are regulated by the FDA.  The study appears in "Pediatrics In Review."
