KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO) - Funeral services are this morning for 19-year-old Kalamazoo College Sophomore Emily Stillman who died Sunday morning from contagious Bacterial Meningitis.
Stillman was a sophomore at Kalamazoo College and a 2011 graduate of Andover High School, where she was captain of a state champion competitive speech team.
Linda Vail, the Director of Kalamazoo’s Health and Human Services Department says there isn’t much the college could have done to prevent it, other than require that all students be vaccinated. Kalamazoo College already does, and Stillman was reportedly vaccinated 5 years ago.
She says it’s a common bacterium that occasionally in some people just flares up and becomes a killer, because a person is stressed or has a secondary infection. So far 150 people, who had contact with the victim, have received vaccinations.
Her advice is for all college students to get inoculated. So far 3 dozen students and staff have signed up to ride a College sponsored bus to the funeral.
