DETROIT (WKZO) -- Scammers are ripping off Michigan colleges for millions of dollars. Over the past year, thousands of Michigan residents have collected federal Pell Grants without attending any classes.
The move is costing Michigan colleges millions of dollars that have to be paid back to the federal government. The grants are available to low and mid-income residents and can be used for tuition and other costs.
Officials say community colleges are being hit hardest by the scam.
