Young immigrants allowed to apply for Michigan IDs

LANSING (WKZO) -- Beginning Tuesday illegal immigrants whose parents brought them into the country when they were young will be allowed to apply for state driver's licenses and IDs.

To be eligible, people have to be 30-years-old or younger,  prove that they arrived in the country before they turned 16 and have been living in the U.S. for at least five years.  Additionally they have to prove they are either in school, have graduated or have served in the military.

For a long time, Secretary of State Ruth Johnson had said that her office would not give licenses to immigrants who qualify under President Obama's Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program.  In December, she reversed her position in a move that could affect up to 23-thousand young immigrants in the state.
