Investigation continues into Michigan man accused of infecting patients

DETROIT (WKZO) -- The investigation continues into a case involving a Canton, Michigan native accused of infecting patients at hospitals in eight states with hepatitis C.

Last month, David Kwiatkowski pleaded not guilty to seven counts each of obtaining controlled substances by fraud, and tampering with a consumer product.  While working as a traveling medical technician, the 33-year-old Kwiatkowski, was infected with hepatitis C.  He is accused of stealing and injecting himself with pain killers and leaving behind the used syringes and needles that were eventually used on patients.

To date, more than 30 of Kwiatkowski's known patients have tested positive for the virus which can lead to liver failure, cancer and, in some cases, death.  If convicted, Kwiatkowski faces ten-years-in prison for each tampering charge and four years for each controlled substances charge.
