KALAMAZOO (WKZO) -- The Broncos fell behind early in their first match of the weekend with Michigan but were able to battle back to win 3-2.
The first period was dominted by Michigan early. Just 4:10 into the game Phil Di Giuseppe put the Wolverines up on a bang bang play from Cristoval Nieves. Then at the 5:56 mark Michigan extended their lead as Alex Guptill beat WMU goalie Frank Slubowski. The Broncos then took a timeout which seemed to slow down the Wolverine offense. At 11:01 Trevor Ellias got the Broncos back into the game from a nice feed from Luke Witkowski and Will Kessel. With time winding down in the period, Jordan Oesterle netted his second goal of the season to tie the game 2-2.
Both teams were able to get shots on net in the second period as Western Michigan outshot the Wolverines 15-8. Neither team could find the back of the net until late when Colton Hargrove gave WMU their first lead of the night at 16:01. Justin Kovacs and Mike Leone both added assists on the goal for a total of two each on the night.
Despite tons of pressue in the third period from Michigan, Slubowski was able to turn aside all 10 Michigan shots to seal the 3-2 victory for the Broncos.
