A fatal crash on U.S. 131 kills one and injures others

ALLEGAN COUNTY (WKZO) -- The 4th of July weekend has gotten off to a deadly start in West Michigan.

A 23-year-old from Hudsonville is dead and another person seriously injured after a pickup truck slammed into the rear of a semi trailer parked on the shoulder of U.S. 131 near the 55-mile marker between Martin and Shelbyville in Allegan County.

State Police say it happened in the southbound lanes of the divided highway,  a little after 3 p.m. Wednesday as holiday travel was picking up.

Southbound traffic backed up for miles causing several additional chain-reaction rear end collisions, some of them also producing injuries. The accident investigation and cleanup took 6 hours.

The driver of the pickup is being treated at Bronson Methodist in Kalamazoo.  No names and few details about injuries have been released.
