KALAMAZOO (WKZO) -- A large cloud of smoke could be seen hanging over the Kalamazoo Metro Area late Thursday night as all the smoke from thousands of fireworks hung in the air.

It was particularly visible in southern Portage last evening, illuminated by the lights on South Westnedge as thousands once again turned out for the fireworks show put on by the Portage Rotary at McCamley Field, and then headed home, to their own fireworks or to bed if they weren’t able to get Friday off work.

Fireworks are the most popular way a community marks the 4th of July, but towns like Richland, Bangor, Lawton and Schoolcraft also feature parades, other towns have day long festivals.

In most cases, the object is to salute those who have gone to war, from the revolution to Afghanistan to win and protect the rights we enjoy.

The fourth is over, but for many it’s just the beginning of an extended summer holiday as the weekend begins.
