PORTAGE (WKZO) -- The Portage City Council has showered high praise on the performance of City Manager Maurice Evans in his annual evaluation and agreed to give him a 2.5% increase to his base pay and a $5,000 bonus.
They also made about a dozen changes to his contract to clean up the language and to provide healthcare for his wife should he go to what one council member called the “Great City Manager’s Office in the Sky”.
Evan’s base pay is now around 133-thousand a year.
$133-thousand/year is about the average salary for a city manager in a middle city in Michigan. Several survey’s provided to Kalamazoo City Commissioners as part of their city manager search shows the chief executives of comparable cities earning anywhere from 115-thousand in Jackson to 154-thousand in Farmington hills.
Kalamazoo City Commissioners have now agreed to advertise the base pay for their new manager at around 150-grand which is 12-thousand more than current manager Ken Collard is getting. They apparently hope the higher salary will attract better candidates.
