KALAMAZOO, MI (WTVB) - Country Singer Randy Travis is improving but remains in critical condition with an infected heart, that could someday be the subject of a country sSong...if he survives. It's called viral cardio-myopathy, and Kalamazoo's Borgess Heart Institute Doctor Vishal Gupta says it's pretty rare, although he does see it a few times each year. The infection weakens the heart.
Doctor Gupta says anyone can get the virus, and he's not sure the hardlifestyle of Travis was a factor in him becoming infected. Doctor Gupta says one treatment may be to install a heart pump and hope the heart heals on its own. Failing that, a transplant could be necessary.
