Detroit – Max Scherzer’s streak of perfection is over. After starting the season with 13 wins before losing a game, Scherzer suffered his first defeat of 2013 on Saturday night, 7-1 to the Texas Rangers.

Scherzer allowed four runs – all earned – on eights hits while striking out six and walking two over six innings of work. Scherzer did however extend his streak of consecutive starts with at least six strikeouts to start a season to 19 and trails only Pedro Martinez’s streak of 29 straight games in 2000 for the longest in baseball history.

The Rangers scored three runs off Scherzer in the fourth inning, highlighted by a two-run home run from Mitch Moreland, his 13th of the season. A.J. Pierzynski’s RBI double in the fifth drove in the fourth run off Scherzer

Derek Holland (8-4) held the Tigers’ loaded offense to just one run in seven innings. Holland struck out seven but gave up five hits and walked a season-high five.

Perez Hernan drove in Jhonny Peralta in the fourth inning for the Tigers only run. Torii Hunter had two hits and Victor Martinez’s 14 game hitting streak came to end as he failed to reach base in four at-bats.

Adrian Beltre added a two-run home run in the ninth inning off of Al Alburquerque capped off a three run inning.

The Tigers and Rangers face off in the rubber match of their three game series on Sunday afternoon as Justin Verlander (9-6, 3. 71 ERA) takes the mound for Detroit in their final game before the All-Star break. Martin Perez (3-1, 2.08) gets the start for Texas. First pitch is set for 1:08.
