COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) - The Branch County jail has been jammed with inmates for the last month and later this week, it’s expected to be officially recognized with an overcrowding emergency likely to be declared by the Circuit Court. It happens when the jail is over its rated capacity of 142 prisoners for seven straight days and day seven was on Saturday, when the population was 151. It was 153 yesterday and peaked at 158 last Thursday. The court declaration will require the early release of inmates to get the jail down to 90% of capacity.
Twice in the past month, the jail was overcrowded for six straight days and then on the seventh day, they managed to release enough inmates to get the population down to 141 prisoners.
