Detroit's Max Scherzer starts MLB All Star Game tonight, Yoenis Cespedes wins Home Run Derby

The ceremonial half way point of the Major League Baseball season is tonight at Citi Field in New York with the 2013 All-Star game. Detroit manager Jim Leyland, the skipper for the American League team, has chosen his own pitcher, Max Scherzer, to start for the AL squad. On the hill opposing Scherzer for the National League will be New York Mets right hander Matt Harvey. Tiger’s slugger Miguel Cabrera will start at third base and be third in the batting lineup. Also on the American League roster from Detroit for the 84th All-Star game are Justin Verlander, who won’t see any action since he pitched Sunday, along with Torii Hunter, Jhonny Peralta, and Prince Fielder.

Last night in the Home Run Derby, Fielder wasn’t able to defend his title from 2012 and was eliminated in the first round with his total of five homers. Athletics outfielder Yoenis Cespedes was the Derby winner. He wasn’t named an All-Star and was picked for the slugfest as a replacement for Miguel Cabrera, who declined the Derby invitation because of a lingering sore back. Cespedes hit nine homers in the final round to defeat Bryce Harper of the Washington Nationals.  The Oakland star bashed 17 home runs in the first round and six in the second to lead everyone with 23 heading into the final round.
