LAPORTE COUNTY, IN (WTVB) - Some may consider a little boy who was buried in a sand dune for over three hours and will apparently live to tell about it, a very lucky child. His grandfather, Pastor Don Reul knows exactly what to call it. He says it was a miracle. Even the firefighters who had been feverishly digging had given up hope by they time they reached the boy, but one found a heartbeat.
Chicago Children's Hospital Pediatric Intensive Care Director, Dr. Tracy Koogler says Nathan Woessner is being treated for sand in his lungs. She says he is responding to treatment and they expect him to go home next week.
The 6-year-old boy playing on the dunes and standing in a hole suddenly vanished under a wave of sand that rolled in at the Indiana Dunes National Park near Michigan City, Indiana. They say he was buried under 11 feet of sand. It took three hours but they managed to dig him out using heavy equipment.
Authorities say an air pocket in the sand apparently allowed Woessner to survive the ordeal.
