Michigan jobless rate rises and politicians react

BATTLE CREEK, MI (WTVB) - The economy is recovering slowly, some call it a sluggish comeback in Michigan and that’s leading to some mixed messages from politicians who will do their best to exploit the issue headed into the 2014 fall elections. Michigan House Speaker Jace Bolger of Marshall yesterday touted the Snyder administration’s efforts to create a more positive atmosphere for companies, at the ribbon cutting for Janesville Acoustics, a new auto parts maker in Battle Creek.

Simultaneously, Democratic gubernatorial candidate Mark Schauer of Battle Creek was citing the June jump in the state’s unemployment rate from 8.4 to 8.7% as proof that Snyder’s policies have failed. If you ask economists, they say the auto industry is primarily responsible for Michigan’s recovery and the greatest drag on the economy is politicians and their layoffs, furloughs, sequesters and early retirements.
