VIDEO: Ford has a better idea, a patrol car that senses bad guys

DEARBORN (WKZO) -- Ford has just introduced a new feature on their Interceptor patrol cars that is right out of a 'Star Trek' script.

It repurposes the sensors that are used to detect cars in the blind spot when the car is moving, to instead detect people when the car is parked.

Ford Engineer Randy Freiburger says they have rewired them to act like a people detector when the car is stopped so no one can sneak up on a patrol officer who may be doing reports.

He says he got the idea while riding along on patrol with police officers and seeing what they actually do on the job.

He says anyone coming up from behind the car will trigger a chime and automatically lock the doors and close the windows on the patrol car.

He says because it already uses equipment that is built into the new cars, they plan to make it standard equipment on all their special modified patrol models.
