The Douglass Community Association is struggling financially to keep its doors open

KALAMAZOO (WKZO) -- The Douglass Community Association is in financial trouble, and may have to close its doors.

Its disturbing news, given the broad range of services and the pivotal role the facility plays in providing for the needs of north side residents. They provide many programs and many others work out of their facility on Patterson Street.

Board President James Liggins Jr. is reluctant to point fingers, but he says previous mismanagement and the loss of a major contributor have left the institution in dire straights.

He says they provide facilities for the Public Library, The Douglass Recovery Center, The Mothers of Hope, the NAACP, the Boys and Girls Club and many others. They have a  farmers market in season and food programs throughout the year.

They also conduct work training programs, and conduct multiple programs of their own as well as provide sports and recreational facilities for the neighborhood’s youngsters.

A gospel music benefit is planned but he says it’s going to take more than the occasional concert and fundraiser to keep the institution operating as it has for the last 90-plus years.

Liggins says they need the community to wrap their arms around the organization and come out of this stronger than they were. He says they have about two months to work it out.
