KALAMAZOO (WKZO) -- Over two dozen local agencies, organizations, institutions and groups in Kalamazoo are gearing up to battle the “summer slide” on this last day of school.

Supt. Micheal Rice says if Kalamazoo is going to be a literacy community and these kids want to make to college, they can’t afford to lose ground in the summer, and he says they can loose months of skills. He says for certain key grades, the district actually provides the books, that’s how important it is.

This week Dr. Rice introduced to the media, the directors of over two dozen programs in Kalamazoo that are preparing to get kids to read over the summertime, by folding reading into their programs.
