COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) - A happy ending early today on the west side of Coldwater where a 2-year old boy was reported missing. The call came into 9-1-1 Branch County Central dispatch around 4:10 a.m. that the toddler was missing from the Old Mill Race Apartment Complex. At one point, the Coldwater Fire Department was summoned to the scene and asked to bring along their thermal imaging camera to assist in the search. Around 90 minutes after the incident was reported, the child was found.
Coldwater Police tell us the resourceful child pulled a chair up to the front door of the first floor apartment where he lived and slipped open a dead lock bolt. He then wandered upstairs to the second story and went into an apartment that was open and unoccupied for maintenance work and apparently fell asleep for awhile. Then about 5:40 am, the child started to move around, the mother and police heard some noises, and that led them to the little boy. Mom will likely tell her son what’s what and maybe a new sturdier, more child proof lock will be installed.
