Memorial Day seat belt enforcement figures released

LANSING (WKZO) -- The numbers are in from a Memorial Day holiday weekend drive to get motorists to buckle up and the figures are up.

26 police agencies located along the major travel routes in Michigan handed out 87-hundred tickets for seat-belt and child seat violations.

Office of Hyway Safety Planning spokesperson Lynn SUtfin says the stepped up enforcement is part of an effort to get more motorists to comply.

The State reached a high for seat belt compliance in 2009 at 98%. Since then it has dropped to 93.6%. They say for every percent not buckling up, there are ten more deaths and 130 more injuries each year.

12-died during the latest holiday period. Police agencies in Kalamazoo, Calhoun, Van Buren, Allegan, Ottawa and 20 other counties participated.

During the sweep, police agencies also arrested 15-drunk drivers, made 29 drug arrests, handed out a thousand tickets for no proof of insurance and arrested 415 on suspended licenses.

Another 7 day enforcement period is planned during the upcoming Fourth of July holiday period targeting drunk drivers.
