The Tigers and Red Sox have split the first two games of their four game series in Detroit after Boston’s 10-to-6 win last night in the showdown of division leaders at Comerica Park. The Red Sox bounced back after losing Thursday on Jhonny Peralta’s walk off homer by roughing up Tiger starter Doug Fister, who was tagged in defeat for 11 hits and six runs over only 3 and a third frames. Miguel Cabrera tried his best to keep it close for Detroit, going 4-for-4 with a three-run homer. It was Cabrera’s 20th homer, and at only 30-years old, he recorded his tenth season with at least 20 home runs. Detroit still has the best home record in the American League at 24-13 while Boston is tops on the road at 23-15. The loss for the Tigers cut their Central Division lead to 3 games over the second place Indians while in the East, the Red Sox are now 2 games up on the Orioles, who fell to the surging Blue Jays as Toronto has won 9 straight. It will be another packed house tonight in Detroit with Max Scherzer on the mound, shooting for an 11-and-0 start for the Tigers.

Last night’s defeat for Detroit happened on the day the Tigers said so long, again, to beleaguered reliever Jose Valverde, who was designated for assignment. However, Valverde could be back, since  he wasn’t released. By designating him, Valverde can stay in the organization if he clears waivers and if he agrees to go to Triple-A Toledo. There was no immediate word on an answer from Valverde, although Detroit general manager and president Dave Dombrowski said they think he can still be a closer for the Tigers if he gets his splitter and command straightened out.

The White Sox got straightened out, at least for one night, with a 9-to-1 victory at Kansas City while the Cubs also won, beating the Astros 3-to-1 Friday afternoon at Wrigley Field.
