ST. PETERSBURG, FL - Following a three-game sweep at the hands of the LA Angels, how would the Detroit Tigers respond as they embarked on an 11-game road trip? Just fine, if last night was any indication. Max Scherzer became the first pitcher to start a season 12-0 since Roger Clemens in 1986 as the Tigers won at Tampa Bay 6-3 in the opener of a 3-game set. Scherzer gave up 3 runs on 4 hits with 1 walk and 9 strikeouts in 7 innings of work. Offensively, Miguel Cabrera hit a 2-run homer in the 1st inning and a solo shot in the 4th, while Prince Fielder launched a 2-run moon shot in the 8th inning that hit one of the catwalks on the Tropicana Field roof. The Tigers are now two games ahead of Cleveland despite the win; that’s because the Indians swept a doubleheader from the White Sox at U.S. Cellular Field, 19-10 and 9-8.
Tonight’s pitching matchup features Justin Verlander for the Tigers going up against Chris Archer of the Rays.
