PORTAGE, MI (WKZO) -- It was standing room only for the funeral of Nathan Fruin as 250 of firefighters and Public Safety Officers from all over the region passed by his open coffin as services began in Portage.
Two thirds of St. Catherine of Sienna Catholic Church was filled with friends, family and just folks from the area who wanted to attend the ceremony, and celebrate the life of the 22-year-old.
An estimated 12-hunded turned out filling the church and overflow seating in the lobby.
A procession to Maple Grove Cemetery was led by a Mattawan Pumper truck bearing the coffin, and included a long line of fire rigs from all over the Midwest. They passed by small groups of residents who stood by the road to see he procession go by.
Fruin suffered a heart attack on his way to a fire call last Tuesday night.
