KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO) -- Rusty Hyder came to last night’s Kalamazoo City Commission meeting to thank everyone who saved his life back on January 3rd, when he suffered a massive heart attack at the Miller Road Post Office, where he works.
It took a team effort, beginning with his co-workers, then Public Safety personnel, then EMT’s and doctors working in concert, in sequence and in shifts to keep his blood moving and his lungs operating.
They used a defibrillator on him over half a dozen times and spent an hour in his office stabilizing him for transport.
Mayor Bobby Hopewell, a former EMT himself says it’s no accident. It’s all because of a plan for emergency medical response that they insisted on.
Two months and one pacemaker later, hyder says he is anxious to get back to work, but felt compelled to publicly thank those responsible first.
