DETROIT, MI (WTVB) - A hearing today in front of a U.S. District judge in Detroit will center on Michigan's constitutional amendment that prohibits same-sex marriage. Hazel Park residents April DeBoer and Jayne Rowse allege that the state's adoption code violates equal protection rights under the U.S. Constitution. Rowse complains that the current state law only recognizes one parent for their three children. The case in the court of Judge Bernard Friedman originally sought joint adoptions, but expanded last fall to challenge the same-sex marriage ban that was voted on in 2004.
