ATHENS, MI (WTVB) - In high school sports, it was one up and one down last night in March Magic for a pair of Branch County area girls basketball teams in the state tournament quarterfinals. In Class-D, Athens is headed back to the Final Four for the second straight year after holding off Plymouth Christian 54-to-48 while in Class-B, Marshall lost to Grand Rapids South Christian 53-to-29.
The victory for Athens last night at Battle Creek Central sets up a rematch for tomorrow night in the semi-finals of last year’s title game at the Breslin Center between Athens and 3-time defending state champion Waterford Our Lady of the Lakes. The Athens-Waterford game tips off at 7:50 while the opening Class-D semi-final between Climax-Scotts and undefeated top-ranked St. Ignace LaSalle is set for 6 p.m.
In the boys March Magic, the second week of tournament play wraps up tonight with regional title games. The schedule includes a Class-B contest at Marshall between unbeaten Stevensville Lakeshore and South Haven while in Class-D at Harper Creek, it’s Climax-Scotts vs. Adrian Lenawee Christian.
