CLDWATER, MI (WTVB) State Police troopers working out of the Coldwater Post are part of stepped up drunk driving enforcement underway now and running through April 8th. It’s about March Madness, and to keep it from spreading from the basketball courts to the state’s roadways. Officers from 26 counties are involved and Anne Readett at The Michigan Office of Highway Safety Planning says they have crunched the numbers and there was a spike in drunk driving arrests caused by spring break, St. Patrick's Day and the Basketball tourneys.
The counties in West Michigan that touch I-94 and the lakeshore are all participating in the beefed up patrols. Readett says while most people have figured it out over the years and do the right thing when they’ve been drinking, they realize there are still a lot of people who haven’t gotten that message.
During the same enforcement period last year, police made nearly 25-hundred arrests in Michigan for drunk driving, one in three charged with being a superdrunk.
