WASHINGTON (WKZO) -- The U.S. Senate will soon take up a bill to make sure the money collected for the Harbor Maintenance Trust Fund from the nation's shippers is actually used for that purpose.
Senator Carl Levin authored the Harbor Maintenance Act to address the 200-million dollar backlog in necessary harbor dredging projects on the Great Lakes. Low water levels and silted waterways have resulted in harbor closings, danger to shipping and boating and reduced cargo capacity for Great Lakes freighters.
