Good Friday services planned

BRONSON, MI (WTVB) - The death and later resurrection of Jesus Christ are the most important events in Christianity.  Today, Good Friday -- the Friday before Easter -- commemorates the execution of Jesus by crucifixion.  It is a day of mourning in the church and special Good Friday services focus on the suffering of Jesus and his death on the cross.

Some communities offer special Good Friday processions, or re-enactments of the Crucifixion. In Branch County, that includes the Way of the Cross event in Bronson this afternoon at 3 p.m.  Many special services in churches focus on the seven last words of Christ on the cross. Pope Francis today will do as so many Popes before him have done and carry a wooden cross during a ceremony at the Coliseum in Rome.

Good Friday also means the Branch County Courthouse is closed today while some banks will have reduced lobby hours this afternoon. Coldwater City and BPU offices close at Noon today. U.S. stock markets are taking the day off today. And today marks the beginning of Spring Break week for schools in Branch County and in many other school districts with students out of class until Monday, April 8th.

And Branch County Treasurer Ann Vrablic says with the Courthouse closed today, 2010 Delinquent Tax payments that are due March 31st will be accepted on Monday, April First as being paid on-time.
