HASTINGS, MI (WKZO) -- Barry County Prosecutor Julie Nakfoor Pratt is calling the police shooting of a Dowling man during a domestic violence investigation early last month justified given the circumstances.
Ralph Elliott III was drunk that night and told his wife just before he shot himself, that he was not going back to jail. He told a police dispatcher that same thing, despite his wound and he told several Barry County Deputies that he wasn’t going back to jail. That’s when he advanced on them and despite 19 separate warnings, being Tasered and kicked in the leg, and even shot once, he continued to advance with his hand in his pocket.
They knew he had a gun because he had shot himself, and fearing for their own safety, officers shot him several more times, killing him.
The Prosecutor laid out her analysis in a lengthy news release, explaining the events of that night in some detail, and closing the case.
