Justin Verlander is slated to make his sixth straight Opening Day start on Monday afternoon when Detroit visits Minnesota and the Tiger’s ace will take to the mound with the richest pitcher’s contract in major league history. The 5-time All-Star and Cy Young and American League MVP winner in 2011 has signed a 180-million dollar, 5-year contract extension running through the 2019 season.  The 30-year old Verlander would have been eligible to become a free agent after the 2014 season. In their next to last Grapefruit League game yesterday, the Tigers beat the Rays 8-to-3 in Lakeland behind the pitching of Max Scherzer, who tossed six innings of one hit ball. Scherzer got home run support from Prince Fielder, Alex Avila, and Omar Infante. Detroit wraps up its spring training schedule today in a return contest against the Rays at Tropicana Field.
