KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO) -- Kalamazoo County could declare a jail overcrowding emergency this morning. It depends on how many arrests were made over night, and what county staff can do thru various strategies to lower the population count.
This is not new territory. There was a time just a few years ago when the jail was constantly overcrowded. Early releases were a weekly feature and the jail simply did not accept minor offenders.
The County could fall back into that state of affairs today thanks to a spike in arrests that came as the weather improved.
It’s a problem that should be relieved when the new jail expansion opens this summer.
