New Bill Would Let Students Miss School For Religious Reasons

KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO) --   A Kalamazoo High School student is the inspiration for new legislation that would allow students to miss school for a religious reason, and not have it count against their attendance record.

Kalamazoo Central Student Madeline Richman, who is Jewish, mentioned that dilemma to Battle Creek House Rep. Kate Segal, because there can be a conflict between Jewish holidays and school schedules.

A bill proposed by Segal to protect the attendance records of students who miss school for religious reasons cleared a house committee this week. It would require that students make up any missed lessons.  Richman testified in committee Hearings saying that she wasn’t asking for any kind of special treatment, just that they not be penalized for their religion.    It now goes to the full House for their consideration.
