Former 7th District Rep Schauer expected to run for governor in Michigan

LANSING, MI (WTVB) - Governor Rick Snyder leads former Congressman Mark Schauer in a poll done for the Democratic Governors Association. But Democrats are highlighting the fact that Snyder's favorability is 5 points into negative territory. Snyder is ahead 46 percent to Schauer's 38 percent in the poll conducted by Washington, D.C.-based Gary Hart Yang Research Group. The firm said a large majority of Michigan voters are not yet familiar with Schauer, so it is not surprising that Snyder leads Schauer in the initial trial heat. According to the Yang Group, Snyder is "extremely vulnerable" and Schauer "would be a strong candidate."

Schauer is widely expected to jump into the Governor's race soon, although three sources told MIRS it would not be this week. Sources said Schauer is expected to have a clear Democratic primary, although one rumor was that AFSCME still wanted former U.S. Rep. Bart Stupak to get in. It's expected, though, that both Stupak and State Board of Education President John Ausin are prepared to step aside in favor of Schauer, a source told MIRS
