Kalamazoo City Noise Task Force Seeking Solution For Late Night Festival Noise

KALAMAZOO.MI (WKZO) -- The Kalamazoo City Noise Task Force will be seeking a compromise to quell complaints about noisy late night festivals that go on until 1 in the morning during the summer downtown.

But some of the comments they received from the public show just how difficult a compromise may be to achieve.  Debbie Droppers who manages some of the summer festivals says her survey shows events nationwide usually end around midnight, earlier than the five in Kalamazoo that end at 1 a.m.

But a number of younger residents said that those late night festivals are what make Kalamazoo different than other cities and attractive for young adults, a key demographic that every city wants to keep. Festival organizers say you aren’t going to attract big national acts to the summer festivals with early curfews and noise restrictions.

Others suggest an early end to the festivals would benefit downtown businesses, who would be flooded by festival goers who weren’t ready to call it a night. Homeowners in Milwood say they shouldn’t have to live with the noise.

The task force plans to call more witnesses and take more public comment before they try to formulate a recommendation for City Commissioners.

They also received and accepted an offer for a presentation from a sound engineer on how sound moves thru the air and can be mitigated and controlled.
