Boater safety class to begin in Branch County

COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) - Michigan ranks number nine in the nation for boating accidents and number six in the nation for boating fatalities, with boating mishaps causing 26 deaths in the state in 2011 alone. National Safe Boating week begins this Saturday so it’s perfect timing for the start of this season’s Branch County Boater Safety Classes. The class is free of charge and is taught at the Branch County 911 center on East Chicago Road next to the airport.

The class is limited to 30 students.  At last word, there were still seats available for the class this Saturday, May 18th.  The hours are from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. so be sure to bring a lunch.

To sign up call Branch County Sheriff's office at 517-278-2325 between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday thru Friday.  For more information and a complete schedule of upcoming Boater Safety classes, go online to Branch County's home page and scroll down to upcoming events then click on Boater Safety Classes. The Branch County Marine Patrol is busy getting their boats ready, putting the buoys in place and prepping for the upcoming classes, all leading up to another safe boating season.
