BRANCH COUNTY, MI (WTVB) - Warmer, dry weather is on the way to Coldwater and Branch County for the upcoming Memorial Day weekend with certainly nothing severe or hazardous in the forecast. Here’s a little history lesson on F5 tornadoes in Michigan. National Weather Service meteorologist Brandon Hoving says he and others in his field have been working for years to better prevent things like the tragedy that occurred in Oklahoma at the beginning of this week. It's just those predicting tornadoes remains too difficult. The Oklahoma twister has now been deemed an F5, which is the strongest kind of tornado. Hoving says Michigan rarely gets F5s. The last one we had was in 1956, in Hudsonville. Before that, it was 1953, the infamous Flint Tornado that killed 116 people. Hoving tells us that even the big Kalamazoo tornado of 1980 was only an F3.
