The Tigers last night outlasted two rain delays and hung on to beat the Indians 11-to-7 at Cleveland to sweep the short two game set. The Detroit win cut the Tribe’s lead atop the American League Central over the Tigers to a half game. Detroit is back home tonight to open a 4-game series against the last place Twins, who come to Comerica Park on an 8-game losing streak. Tiger ace Justin Verlander had his third straight shaky outing but managed to pick up the win and improve to 5-and-4 despite allowing five runs on ten hits over five innings. He also had 9 strikeouts, the last of which came at the end of the fifth frame, which ended when Verlander faced two batters after waiting out the first rain delay that lasted 62 minutes.   Detroit was up 9-to-2 at one point and the Indians trimmed the lead to 9-7 before Miguel Cabrera added a pair of insurance runs with a 2-run homer in the top of the eighth. Cabrera also had drove in a run with a first inning double and currently leads the majors in rbi’s with 52 and in hitting with a .387 average.

The White Sox lost 6-to-2 last night at Boston while the Cubs were blanked 1-0 at Pittsburgh.
