Obstacle course racing grows as Kalamazoo sees return of Mud Run

KALAMAZOO (WKZO) -- Course runners start on their feet, but eventually end up on their stomachs, sides, even backs at they clamber through mud, over obstacles, and across mangled hurdles.

Sound like fun?

The current trend in obstacle racing started a few years ago, when elite athletes began searching for new challenges that didn’t involve adding more distance to a race. Even though a new trend, obstacle course races have deep roots stemming back to the ancient Greeks who were notorious for their dangerous, even deadly, obstacle races.

With the increase in race popularity, the Kalamazoo Mud Run is returning for its second year offering participants to show up clean and leave covered in mud.

The race itself is a 5k walk/run with 15 to 20 military style obstacles and lots of mud. The Kalamazoo Mud Run is both a competitive and non-competitive event offering runners the option to race for best time or just have fun with friends. There is also an opportunity to participate as a team in the event with unlimited team members.

The theme of the race, "Get Dirty for Clean Water" seeks to raise awareness of the water-borne illnesses causing sickness and even death in communities in Africa. The Kalamazoo Mud Run will use funds raised to support the goal of Operation Starfish installing 50 new wells in 50 villages over the next 5 years.

The Kalamazoo Mud Run is Saturday, June 8 and will be starting at the Kalamazoo Community Church on 2435 North 26th Street. Online registration ends June 5th at 6 p.m. Prices vary depending on race. Learn more and register for the run at The 2013 Kalamazoo Mud Run page.
