COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) - Between the rain, the cool temperatures and the mosquitoes, it was not the greatest Memorial Day to be outdoors. While it might have been a little uncomfortable around here, in some parts of the country where extreme weather recently struck, it was miserable. Of course the clean-up and recovery continues in Moore, Oklahoma, where an EF-5 tornado destroyed over a thousand homes and two elementary schools. In Central Texas, intense rains caused flooding and killed three. In upstate New York, some areas received about three feet of snow.
Michigan’s foremost expert on mosquitoes says they may be annoying and aggressive this spring, but at least they aren’t dangerous to humans. Michigan State University Biology Professor Ned Walker says the worst this species of Flood Plain Mosquito can do to you is steal a little blood and leave a little welt. The species that carries West Nile doesn’t appear until late summer. He says your dog is a different issue. This mosquito may carry a parasite that can lead to heartworm in dogs. He says Deet is the best way to fend them off and don’t be afraid to use it.
