KALAMAZOO (WKZO) -- All too often it seems that justice in America is anything but “Swift and Sure” but a new program that promises and delivers both to serious offenders is now up and running in Kalamazoo and will soon be installed in Van Buren County.
In fact it’s called "Swift and Sure" and its based on a Hawaiian program that takes offenders who have flunked out of other probation programs and gives them one last chance to avoid jail, with intensive monitoring and drug and alcohol screening.
Problem Solving Courts Administrator Ann Filkens says they are told that there is no room for error and this is their last chance. Screw up and they find themselves in jail the next day.
That’s why they call it “swift and sure”. She says in not only saves taxpayers money, because its less expensive than prison, but it saves lives.
