CERESCO (WKZO) -- Work has begun by Enbridge to remove the Ceresco Dam, and it begins slowly.
The old dam which was originally used to power flour mills and then to generate electricity, hasn’t been functional for nearly half a century.
Enbridge spokesman Jason Manshum says the first step is to lower the water behind the dam and they do that by putting a notch in the dam so the water can run out.
He says after all the cement is removed, the area will be restored.
People who live around it say it’s a fixture and part of the identity of the community.
The DNR says it’s a hazard to navigation for recreational boaters and spawning fish, and the river will be healthier after it’s gone next year.
