NEWPORT NEWS, VIRGINIA (WKZ0) -- The USS Gerald R. Ford is being christened. The Aircraft carrier is the first of a new class of aircraft carriers that will project American Power overseas, carrying the name of Michigan’s only President.
The President’s Daughter, Susan Ford Bales has played a role in its construction and will crack the bottle over its nose when it’s christened Saturday in North Carolina.
It’s serious business. This floating city will have unimaginable firepower.
They plan two more like it, one of them to be named the John F. Kennedy, the other the U.S.S. Enterprise.
The ship will still need considerably more work. They laid the beam in 2009 and say it will be ready for duty in 2016, at a cost of over 13-billion dollars.
