OSHTEMO (WKZO) -- Folks in Oshtemo may be paying more for police protection in the coming budget year, but they would also have more County Deputies to call on when they need assistance.
The plan is to hire five more deputies. Last night the Township board set up special assessment district that include some of the major apartment complexes in the south east part of the Township.
There were objections from several business and home owners, who objected to the additional expense and the inequity of charging businesses more than homeowners for the same service.
Instead of raising it to 5.5 mils, the Trustees voted instead to raise it 3.25 mils, responding to their concerns.
Homeowners will see their law enforcement millage jump from .5 to 1.25.
Now they have to negotiate with the sheriff to see if they can obtain additional deputies, and they can provide the outcomes on response times and crime clearance rates that the Township would like to see. It will be back to the board one more time if they can secure a deal.
