LANSING (WKZO) -- Officials with the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development have issued a warning about a canine virus that can be transmitted to humans.

Cases of canine brucellosis have been reported in Calhoun, Montcalm and Mackinaw Counties in the past four months.  The bacterial disease can cause a number of issues in dogs including stillbirths, inflammation of the reproductive system and eye problems.

Officials say if a human comes in contact with an infected dog's saliva, eye, or nasal fluid or urine they could experience fever, body aches, headaches, sweating and fatigue.  Officials say an infected animal will not have to be euthanized but antibiotics alone will not cure the disease in dogs.
