OSHTEMO TOWNSHIP (WKZO) -- A person was struck and killed by an Amtrak train that had just left the Kalamazoo station bound for Chicago.
The victim was walking with their back to the train, down the tracks in the same direction as the train near KL Avenue and 11th in Oshtemo Township.
The engineer says despite sounding the horn and hitting the brakes, the victim never turned around. The train was going 70 mph and could not stop in time.
Undersheriff Pali Matyas says the victim was so badly mangled it may take an autopsy just to determine the gender. They do not have an identification.
It happened about 3:30 p.m., and stopped the 9-car train, which was full of travelers heading home for the holidays. After an hour and a half it was cleared to leave.
