UNDATED (WKZO) -- The Federal Government has been shutting down all non-essential services, because Congress was unable to reach agreement on a budget extension.
There will be furloughs at the Federal Center and the Air National Guard Base in Battle Creek, and federal workers in Michigan hope it won’t last long.
Some are being told to just stay home, others will come in for half a day to change phone voice messages, close down computers and secure whatever needs securing.
The Michigan National Guard says nearly 13-thousand citizen soldiers will be furloughed if the government shutdown goes on long enough.
While a provision allows active duty soldiers to keep fighting, that does not apply to guardsmen who may only train once a month. They won’t be reporting for at least the next two weekends.
Spokeswoman Angela Simpson says About 900 full time technicians will report in today but they won’t stay.
She says they are available and will be called up in case of a natural disaster.
If you ask them, Michigan residents will tell you that they are wondering why their representatives in Washington couldn’t have work things out and avoided a government shutdown.
It is drenched in irony because the one thing conservative House Republicans wanted to shut down, the Affordable Healthcare act will go on, with the introduction of healthcare market places today. It’s the rest of government, and possibly the economy, that is grinding to a halt.
