State budget director blasts Congress for government shutdown

LANSING, MI (WTVB) - The state of Michigan’s chief number cruncher says the federal government shutdown is ridiculous and hurtful for those who have been furloughed,  and if they can’t end it soon the pain will begin to spread. Michigan Budget Director John Nixon says the state receives about $55-million a day, most of it spent on protected programs like Social Security, Medicaid and Medicare. Nixon says the state has funding for the Food Stamp program thru October even less than that for many other programs like child nutrition, school lunches and social services.

Nixon says Congress has to sort out its differences and soon. $18-million a day from Washington is for non-essential services, like federal parks, the Michigan National Guard, and some of the functions at the Federal Centers in Battle Creek  Lansing and Detroit, where furloughs and closures have already taken place.
