Tigers' stage comeback against A's to force deciding game five Friday at Oakland

DETROIT, MI (WTVB) - The Tigers rallied last night to beat the A’s 8-6 in a  must-win Game 4 victory for Detroit at Comerica Park that evens up their best of five American League Division Series at two games apiece with the deciding game set for tomorrow night at Oakland. There were plenty of heroes for the Tigers, who trailed 3-0 until Jhonny Peralta smacked a 3-run homer in the bottom of the fifth. The A’s went ahead 4-3 in the seventh but in the bottom of the frame, Victor Martinez hit a disputed game-tying solo homer and slump-ridden Austin Jackson had a broken bat rbi single to put Detroit ahead 5-4. The Tigers tacked on 3 more runs in the eighth, including a 2-run double by Omar Infante.

The night’s real drama unfolded in the top of the eighth when Game One winner Max Scherzer, who came out of the bullpen an inning earlier, wiggled out of a bases-loaded, no-out jam with two strikeouts and a hard hit flyout to centerfield on a 3-2 pitch. Scherzer picked up the victory for Detroit. The A’s didn’t go down quietly in the ninth, getting a 2-out, 2-run single off Joaquin Benoit, who was able to strikeout the next batter to end it.

Justin Verlander, who registered a 4-hit shutout at Oakland in last season’s ALDS Game 5 clincher for Detroit, goes to the mound tomorrow night against the A’s, who haven’t yet named their starting pitcher for Thursday. The Detroit-Oakland survivor will take on the Boston Red Sox in the American League Championship Series after the Red Sox advanced last night with a 3-1 win at Tampa Bay, eliminating the Rays 3-games-to-1.

There’s a Game 5 tonight in the Pirates-Cardinals NLDS with Pittsburgh at St. Louis. The winner moves on to face the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League Championship series.
